We set out to rank bed racks and ended up somewhere more useful. After logging 231 owner reports across 15 products on the Ranger, General, Defender, Pioneer and Mule forums and retailer pages, the most-loved way to carry more on a Polaris bed isn't a bed rack at all: it's a headache rack. General owners in particular mostly skip over-bed racks, because their bed frame bends when weight sits on the rear corners.
So this guide covers every way to carry more on a side-by-side bed — over-bed shelves, full-height systems, headache racks and bed extenders — on one scoring sheet, with separate awards for each.
The short version. The Polaris Rear Headache Rack with Winch Mount is our top pick: 49 owners report a flawless fit on the Ranger 1000 and XP 1000, a ready-made mount for lights and a winch, and a bed that stays completely open. If you want a platform over the bed, the Tusk Cargo Rack is the best over-bed shelf and the Kolpin UTV Overbed Cargo Rack is the best value across the widest range of machines. The Thumper Fab Ultimate is the only full-height system with enough owners behind it to trust. On a General, start with the Polaris Tip-Down Headache Rack and read the fitment note before buying anything that loads the rear of the bed.

No product in this guide has a bigger or happier owner base. Forty-nine Ranger owners, most of them on 2024–2026 machines including NorthStars with OEM doors, report that the bolt holes line up and the rack goes on in 10 to 30 minutes — though its width makes it a two-person job, and one owner used a floor jack in the bed to hold it at height. The reason people buy it is what it lets them hang: light pods on the built-in tabs, bow holders, decoys, and Polaris's rear winch kit for loading deer and hogs into the bed.
One detail matters more than it looks. The current version bolts to the roll cage, not the bed. Owners who had the previous bed-mounted version say the change makes dumping easier because the rack's weight is no longer on the bed. One unit arrived with its top plate bowed from welding, and Polaris publishes no capacity rating. It adds no platform over the bed; if that's what you need, keep reading.

This is what General owners actually run. It protects the rear glass, its center section tips down into a 200 lb tray for a cooler or toolbox, and it keeps weight off the rear bed corners. It also has the best long-term evidence in this guide: one owner reports a full season of hard use with it still rock solid, and a forum owner ran a gas can and cooler on the tray for 18 months without an issue.
Two things to check. The rubber straps that hold the tray up are the weak point — one tore within two months, and another owner found them too short to fasten easily. And one owner's strap bolts sat against the rear-glass frame from day one; closing the dump bed later punched a hole through his rear sliding window, which Polaris acknowledged. Check that clearance before your first dump. It also can't be used with Polaris's spare-tire carrier, and it takes the General-size Lock & Ride anchor, not the Ranger size.

Of the over-bed shelves with enough owners to score, the Tusk rates highest. General owners describe an exact fit, a solid shelf with no flex or rattle reports, and tie-down points everywhere; one ran a 14-gallon fuel station and a cooler on top with a spare and toolbox underneath. Nobody reports a hole that didn't line up.
Every complaint is about installation access: reaching the anchor points under the General's bed rail is a knuckle-scraper, and one owner lost skin doing it. Loaded tall, it blocks the rear-view mirror. Tusk publishes no capacity or weight, and most reviews were written in the first weeks of ownership, so finish durability is unknown.

The cheapest branded rack in the guide and the one with the widest owner-confirmed fitment: owners have it on Ranger 570 mid-size and full-size, XP 900 and XP 1000 models, the General XP, the Defender HD10 MAX, the Commander, the Xpedition and a Mule Pro-FXT. Sixteen owners describe it as sturdy and rigid, with no loosening reports, and several installed it in about ten minutes.
Budget for the mounting kit. The universal brackets need a machine-specific kit sold separately — 53504 for Polaris Lock & Ride, 53503 for Can-Am LinQ, 53502 for tube-bed machines — and six owners found out only after delivery. Also know that the inside of the basket measures about 18.5 by 44.75 inches, smaller than listed; that Kolpin's own gun-boot and Rhino Grip mounts don't fit its cutouts without different hardware; and that two owners received units damaged in shipping.

Full-height systems are the thinnest lane in this guide, and the Thumper Fab is the only one with a real owner base — 33 across its Ranger and Defender versions. Fit is spotless: owners on both machines say it lines up perfectly and sits like it was built for the truck. It's heavy steel, made in Texas, and the rear gate, spare-tire carrier and light kit bolt on.
The instructions are the brand's weak point. Nine owners call them bad or unusable, one received only QR codes with no signal to download them, and one found the install video was for a different rack. Some kits arrive short on M8 hardware. One Ranger owner reports the rack came off on its first ride and the company declined to repair it — a single report, but the only mounting failure in the dataset. At about 70 lb, taking it off is a two-person job.

The only scored extender, and it scored low. Owners agree it adds a lot of room — one fits a 65-quart cooler behind the seats on a Pioneer 1000-5 — and the steel is thick. But 12 of 27 call the instructions wrong or incomplete, most skip the tailgate-removal step entirely, and nine 1000-5 owners say the tailgate won't close with the rear seats up unless you grind about an inch off the extender or notch the bed. Five report rattling, one lost bolts to vibration, and one bracket broke at a month. We didn't award a best bed extender.
Which kind of rack do you need?
An over-bed shelf adds a second deck a few inches above the rails and leaves the bed usable underneath. A full-height system builds a cage-height platform with a gate, tire carrier and accessory mounts — more capacity, more weight, more to take off. A headache rack protects the rear glass and gives you a mounting plane for lights, a winch or a tip-down tray, but adds no platform. A bed extender lengthens the bed with the tailgate down.
Three questions decide it:
Can your bed take weight at the rear corners? On the Polaris General, owners report bent bed frames and widening tailgate gaps from over-bed racks — one with only a 30 lb toolbox and firewood. General owners overwhelmingly run a headache rack or an extender instead.
Does the bed still need to dump? Every product here claims yes. Owners confirm it on the Polaris headache racks and the Kolpin, and warn that a 145 lb full-height rack makes dumping hard work.
Are you adding a platform or a mounting plane? Coolers and boxes want a shelf. Lights, a winch and decoys want a headache rack. Firewood and feed want an extender.
What General owners actually run
In two long Polaris General Forum threads, no owner reported running the Tusk, Seizmik or SuperATV shelves. Five run the Polaris tip-down headache rack. Four run a rack from Dragon Works, an Idaho fabricator that ships a bed support after owners reported bent frames. Three run a rack from B's Fab, sold through Facebook, that includes stabilizer brackets to tie the bed down. Three built their own in aluminum to keep weight off the bedsides. The common thread is the bed, not the rack: weight at the rear corners bends it. If you run an over-bed rack on a General, keep the load light and forward.
How we chose
Sources. Forum build threads and long-term owner posts (Polaris General Forum, PRC Forum, Can-Am Forum), retailer reviews with written text (Rocky Mountain ATV, Amazon, polaris.com, thumperfab.com, superatv.com), and maker pages for specs and fitment only. We did not test these products ourselves; every score comes from what owners reported.
Report counts. 231 owner reports across 15 products, plus 32 reports from General owners describing what they run instead. Each owner is counted once. Secondhand reports and reviews written by brand staff are excluded, as are reviews for sport machines that use a different version of a rack.
Criteria and weights. Fit & install 20 · Strength & rigidity 25 · Finish durability 15 · Versatility 15 · Bed access & dump 15 · Clearance & removability 10. Each criterion is scored 1–10 from owner reports; the total is the weighted average.
Threshold. A criterion needs 15 distinct owner mentions to count as settled; thinner bars are marked. A product needs enough owners on at least one criterion to be scored at all. Nine products didn't reach that; they're listed below under Others we considered.
What we couldn't verify. Finish after a season: retailer reviews are mostly written in the first weeks of ownership, and only about ten owners in the whole set report back after a year, so finish scores are directional for every product. Most headache racks and extenders have no published capacity rating, and most makers don't publish rack weight; where we list a weight from an owner, we say so.
What's in and out. We started this as a bed-rack roundup and widened it after the research showed owners treat racks, headache racks and extenders as one decision. Every criterion applies to all four types unchanged. We left out roof racks, hitch carriers, storage boxes, modular rail systems sold as systems, and winch-integrated game loaders. Cage-mounted headache racks are in; cage-mounted over-bed racks are not, because moving the load off the bed changes what the product is.
Others we considered
These nine came up in our research but don't have enough owners writing about them online to score honestly. Here's what the owners we did find reported.
- Seizmik Full Height Bed Rack — full-height, full-size Ranger and Defender, 5 owners. Clean welds and a bed that still tilts, but one owner puts it at about 145 lb, and another's side brackets bent under a fuel cell on a desert ride. Doesn't fit the mid-size Ranger.
- Razorback Utility / Expedition Rack — full-height, Ranger, General XP, Defender and Mule Pro, 3 owners. Well liked, with one General owner past 2,000 miles, but General owners also name it when talking about bed frames that widen under rear weight.
- SuperATV Outfitter Bed Rack — full-height, Ranger XP 1000 and Defender HD10, 3 owners. The biggest platform here, well built for the price, but heavier than "aluminum" suggests, and the LED wiring can't run inside the legs.
- Rough Country Over Bed Cargo Rack — over-bed shelf, Ranger and Defender, 3 owners. Heavy duty at the price with the widest fitment chart on the list; the punched floor snags gear and the packaging tends to fail in transit.
- SuperATV Bed Rack Delta — over-bed shelf, Polaris General, 3 owners. Easy install and a good fit, but the rubber bushings in the bed holes work loose on the trail and need retightening.
- Seizmik Dump Bed Rack — over-bed shelf, Polaris General 2016–2023, 3 owners. Low, light and no-drill, with a basket that comes off without tools; rated for 100 lb.
- Polaris Lock & Ride Bed Extender/Divider (Ranger) — bed extender, Ranger 1000 / XP 1000, 2 owners. Solid and quiet and doubles as a bed divider, but it doesn't fold, so it has to come off to close the tailgate.
- Polaris Lock & Ride Bed Extender (General) — bed extender, General 2016–2020, 2 owners. One owner runs it at full bed weight for rescue work; another notices play from its single anchor per side.
- Kemimoto Bed Tailgate Extender (Ranger) — bed extender, Ranger 1000 / XP 1000, 7 owners. Flips forward toward the cab and the bed still dumps, but three of seven owners report a bad fit or missing bolts, and the rail plugs strip and loosen with use.
